Disrupting the Grid

Disturbing the Grid Disturbing the Grid Disturbing the Grid At the point when its acclaimed marble quarries shut during the 1980s, Rutland, Vermont, lost several positions and its once-flourishing economy fell into decay. Dispossessions, joblessness, populace misfortune, heroin compulsion, and different ills tormented the town of around 16,500 inhabitants. Be that as it may, Rutlanders longed for a more brilliant futureliterally. In this far upper east corner of the nation, which is known more for its natural awareness than its sun, numerous Rutland inhabitants built up an unmistakable fascination for sunlight based vitality. They before long found a solid supporter in Mary Powell, the CEO of Green Mountain Power, the neighborhood electrical utility. Powell, an exile from the universe of banking, is an eccentric official who earned her degree in expressions and music, works behind a standing work area, established an organization selling intelligent wear for pets, and has a pet pig named Oddball. She has for quite some time been fixated on meeting her clients needs and wants, and since what the clients needed in Rutland was sun based force, Powell was resolved to convey it. Her journey to do so has put Green Mountainand Rutlandon the cutting edges of a key move in the countrys electrical framework and force age framework. Under CEO Mary Powell, Green Mountain Power constructed the greatest sun based homestead in Vermont. Throughout the most recent decade sun based boards have spread over the scene, on account of fast innovative advances, sustainable agreeable approaches, new guidelines to battle environmental change, and a blasting worldwide market. Sun powered force presently supplies clean power to a large number of homes, schools and organizations across the nation. However, as housetop sun based and different types of disseminated power age spread further, it presents basic new difficulties for utilities and matrix directors. The electrical matrix was planned and worked in the only remaining century to oversee single direction, fast power stream from huge force plants. In any case, in a couple of brief years it could battle with enormous volumes of abundance power sent back to the matrix from homegrown sun based force and little wind turbines. Whats more, when the sun ducks behind a cloud or when a solid breeze bites the dust, sun based or wind vitality drops off quickly. As housetop sun oriented and wind power multiply, this discontinuity could make it harder for utilities to guarantee a dependable gracefully of power. Today they do that by rapidly starting up, speeding, or easing back a turning turbine at a focal force plant. Controlling innumerable scattered sun powered boards and wind turbines isn't so natural. For these reasonsand to improve the electrical frameworks performanceefforts are in progress to modernize the lattice. The government, states, utilities, and transmission framework administrators have all propelled significant endeavors to change the lattice, with circulated sunlight based as a focal part. In 2015 the Obama organization called for Congress to contribute an uncommon $3.5 billion more than ten years to modernize the network and set it up for more elevated levels of sustainable power source, including a deluge of dispersed sunlight based. New York States driven Renewing the Energy Vision (REV) offers impetuses for organizations to think of inventive plans of action that benefit from the spread of housetop sunlight based and different types of disseminated sustainable age. And keeping in mind that a few utilities around the nation have attempted to diminish the development of housetop sunlight based in light of the fact that they see the development of disseminated age as a danger to their business, different utilities have bolstered it. Be that as it may, few have worked more diligently at staging in disseminated sun based than Green Mountain Power, and it utilizes the town of Rutland, Vermont, to demonstrate it works. There, the utility propelled a yearning intend to scale up sun based age and pilot the responsive, interconnected network advancements expected to make a more slender and cleaner power framework. This implied introducing sun based boards to give a gigantic measure of the communitys power. It additionally implied assembling an independent sun oriented controlled microgrida segment of the framework that can disengage from the bigger network to keep power streaming in any event, when tempests cause territorial power outages. Amusingly, Rutlands microgrid and circulated sun powered age harken back to the past, when huge transmission frameworks were not yet conceivable, and power was produced and conveyed locally. Its a touch of back to the future, Powell said. Back to the future, better than ever. ;custompagebreak; Here comes the sun Individuals have utilized sun based force for quite a long time, building abodes to exploit the suns warmth and utilizing glass to think daylight to light fires. Early sun based cells were created in the late 1800s, and in 1954 Bell Labs delivered the primary photovoltaic (PV) board that could create power from daylight. Following quite a while of improvement, sunlight based PV started arriving at a mass market during the 1990s as mechanical advances made sun oriented boards increasingly productive, and strategy changes and market powers prodded the youthful business to develop. In 1991, Germany actualized an arrangement that paid housetop sun powered board proprietors retail rates for the power they provided to the lattice. Housetop sun powered detonated in that nation. Chinese producers increased their determination to satisfy the new need, turning into the universes driving sun powered board maker. Today sunlight based PV gives around 7 percent of Germanys power utilization, and up to 50 percent on radiant end of the week days. What's more, innovative advances and economies of scale helped drive costs down around the world. In the United States, for instance, the expense of introducing private sun based plunged from more than $9 a watt in 2007 to $4 in 2014, as per the U.S. Branch of Energy. This is cheap enough that in around 20 statesespecially states like Hawaii and California with bright climate and high vitality costssolar vitality has accomplished matrix equality, implying that sun oriented costs close to different types of vitality. Notwithstanding significant changes in rate structure or motivations, network equality is relied upon to spread across the country by 2020, as indicated by a February report from GTM Research. This could convince significantly more Americans to go sunlight based. Some vitality examiners and utilities stress that less expensive sun oriented PV and other dispersed age could trigger a demise winding for utilities, in which clients draw less power from the framework, lessening incomes, and constraining utilities to raise rates. This could drive more clients into the arms of contending retail vitality providers, and propel more individuals to create their own vitality, diminishing utility incomes further. A few utilities are making preemptive strikes to protect their income under their conventional plan of action, including proposing overcharges on clients who introduce sunlight based boards. Be that as it may, a couple, including Green Mountain, have grasped the changes. The insurgency is coming, Powell said. Would you like to oppose it, would you like to tail it, would you like to be a piece of it, or would you like to quicken it? Were quickening it. Sunlight based in addition to capacity Green Mountains first raid into sun oriented happened in 2007, when it manufactured a 200-kilowatt sunlight based ranch on a brownfield in Berlin, Vermont, a town simply outside the state capital, Montpelier. It was the greatest sun powered ranch in Vermont. A couple of years after the fact, it broke that record. In association with the sunlight based designer groSolar and utilizing state and government financing, Green Mountain fabricated a monstrous sun oriented establishment called Stafford Hill on a landfill in Rutland. It went online the previous summer with 7,700 sun based boards that can produce 2.5 megawatts of electricity15 times more than the utilitys first sun oriented ranch, and enough to control around 3,000 homes, or in excess of 33% of Rutlands all out. Stafford Hill was in excess of a sun based farmit was a piece of the countrys first microgrid controlled totally by sunlight based. A microgrid is a little arranged area of the matrix that can produce its own power from appropriated generationsolar boards, wind turbines, consolidated warmth and force, geothermal establishments, or biodigestersand can be detached from the bigger framework to work self-sufficiently. Microgrids can profit utilities by taking care of abundance power they produce into the bigger network for the utility to utilize. What's more, not normal for the good old lattice, which commonly stores moderately little vitality, they can utilize that overabundance vitality to charge banks of batteries to draw on later. To help Rutlands microgrid work self-governingly, for instance, Green Mountain supplied it with enough lithium-particle and lead-corrosive batteries to save to 3.5 megawatt-hours worth of power from Stafford Hills sunlight based boards and discharge it around evening time or on shady days. Microgrids can likewise help a towns fiasco versatility. Rutlands microgrid incorporates an area of town with the nearby secondary school, which fills in as a crisis cover in a district that is every now and again rocked by serious tempests and endured enormous blackouts in 2011 during Hurricane Irene. Not your dads network At the point when an excess of power streams onto a customary network from housetops all over town, solars characteristic inconstancy can trigger voltage vacillations. These gleams in the power conveyed to clients can meddle with the working of gadgets, machines, and modern hardware. Whats increasingly, disseminated sun powered causes sharp blasts or drops in power when its working regularly, yet those huge vacillations can cause issues on a conventional framework, making segments of the network be consequently detached as a wellbeing measure. On the off chance that a network relies upon sun oriented age to satisfy its general vitality needs, such stumbling could cause pointless power deficiencies. The lattice resembles a wave pool, clarified Benjamin Gaddy, chief of innovation advancement at the Clean Energy Trust, a Chicago business quickening agent. The inquiry is how would you confirm that the new rush of intensity youre adding to the current wave doesnt take that wave out of parity. ;custompagebreak; The appropriate response is

On The Job By Anita Bruzzese Dont Be Pond Scum

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Helpful information and recommendation from America's favourite workplace columnist Tuesday, August 17, I do not know anybody who likes having a life upturned. Whether it is shedding a job, being pressured to tackle extra work or having to take care of highway development that provides half-hour to a commute, no one likes change. But if you'll look back over your life and profession, I'll guess you find situations the place change seemed like a really bad thing -- then it turned out to be OK. Maybe you hated your new co-worker at first, but then came upon he's a whiz at fixing damaged iPods. Or, maybe your division was merged with another and you lost some cool shoppers, which made you mad. But then you definitely discovered your new assignment meant worldwide journey, which you love. Sometimes when change comes, we react badly. We lash out -- we get pissed and emotional and act like a big baby or a giant jerk. I think that is OK, as long as you see that you need to share those feelings with somebody you belief -- and not just rain hellfire and damnation down upon innocent bystanders. Once you take care of the feelings, then it may be a lot simpler to maneuver on and accept the change coming your method. When facing change, additionally think about: 1. You don't want to stagnate. This has been a killer summer, and I can't begin to tell you the nasty issues rising within the pond close to my house. That water has stood still for thus long that you can stroll simply across the inexperienced scum growing on prime. Don't be pond scum. Remember you've got to keep churning things every every so often to remain contemporary. Some of that churn shall be your idea, a few of it will not. 2. You're greater than a job. Maybe your job isn't excellent, perhaps you do not even have one. You're greater than only one job. Put your ingenuity to work elsewhere. Figure out how to help the native colleges get extra books as public funding dries up. Go s troll canine on the animal shelter. Teach a neighborhood child tips on how to ride a motorbike. Become a well-rounded human being -- be more than a job. three. Move correctly. If you don't know tips on how to handle the change in your life, attain out to those that clearly have been via it many times. Older relations or colleagues can usually give you a perspective that helps you see that you'll emerge from the other aspect. You'll see that just as sh*t occurs, so does change. What are some other methods to deal with modifications that impression our lives and careers? Social Bookmarking One way of looking at change, I'd suppose, is to try to put it in perspective of your personal or career development. How you take care of change can positively impression your employer's perspective of you. You're not making an attempt to be a pushover, however you are really a flexible group member who's greater than able to rolling with the punches...somebody with a can-do perspective. We all kno w that change is the one fixed within the workplace. Whether or not that change was led to after educated deliberation or silly choice doesn't really matter...as a result of adjustments will occur no matter what we think about it. If you need to rant, get it out of your system one time (I would suggest in writing so whenever you're carried out you possibly can throw it away and move on to the next factor), then be done with it. The more you dwell and seethe about it, the less you'll be inclined to do anything...together with your job! Why You Should Search for a Career, Not a Job - Your Career Intel

Why You Should Search for a Career, Not a Job - Your Career Intel Insights show that, during your working years, you'll spend about 33% of your time at work. Let that hit home. You invest more energy working than you do on some other movement in your life. That is the reason discovering vocation, not work, is a key part of a satisfying life. Everything comes down to the idea of vocation versus work. An occupation is something you do to take care of the tabs. A profession takes care of the tabs as well, yet it likewise bears you reason, satisfaction and delight. As a Managing Partner in official enlistment, I've helped several up-and-comers discover their approach to vocations that make them eager to go to work in the first part of the day. In case you're prepared to find employment elsewhere behind and begin arranging a profession, here are three basic strides to kick your off. Recognize Where Your Passion and Skills Intersect It would be pleasant if enthusiasm was sufficient to seek after your preferred profession, yet any individual who has ever observed a tryout scene of American Idol realizes that is false. Enthusiasm is the thing that gets you roused in any case, eventually, you should be extraordinary at whatever it is you need to do (and take a stab at it) to get where you need to be. Make two segments on a bit of paper. On one side, list everything you're enthusiastic about. On the opposite side, list everything you're acceptable at. Try not to keep down; record everything and anything that rings a bell. At that point conceptualize each profession that interests to you and falls at the crossing point. At long last, do your examination and make sense of which vocations are practical alternatives. After I left the U.S. Military, I needed to experience this activity myself. I had involvement with the board and building, yet I didn't especially appreciate those sorts of employments. Then again, I had an enthusiasm for driving, preparing and guiding individuals, and I was gifted at that also. Some profession ways I considered were down to earth, while I put in a safe spot others for reasons like compensation, geology and personal satisfaction. Official enlisting ticked the entirety of the containers for me, and now I wake up each day thinking how great I have it. Best Places to Work - Is Your Company Interested in Making the List

“Best Places to Work” - Is Your Company Interested in Making the List Your Company Is Interested in Making the Best Places to Work List Your Company Is Interested in Making the Best Places to Work List Recruiting Trends Week is upon us! Each day, everday this week Blogging4Jobs is taking it to the streets to find out what trends will be the trend in recruiting. What do you think? What trend do you see as #1 in 2014? Let us know  here!  Elevate your brand and HR Recruiting practitioners. Learn more about sponsoring a future themed week on Blogging4Jobs by clicking  here. Google has just been ranked No. 1 (again!) on the list of “100 Best Companies to Work For” by Fortune.   Do you know what makes their company so great?   The answer is painfully simple â€" “The reason why Google is such a great workplace is because the company believes that treating people well is more important than making a lot of money.” A company that cares about people more than money?   Maybe Google is so good because of the great perks that come with the job…like being able to have free meals every day.   Or maybe it’s their Global Education Leave program that allows employees to take a leave of absence to pursue further education for up to 5 years and $150,000 in reimbursement?? Or maybe it’s because of the countless other fun, exciting and out-of-the-box bennies that come with the job.   There’s got to be some truth that the reason Google is so great is due to these outrageous add-on’s that come with the paycheck. Maybe.   But none of these things would matter if people didn’t feel valued or treated with respect.   Corporate culture, leadership, and collaboration have been constant buzz words in 2013…and it seems like it’s just talk.   But I can feel the shift in the air. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} For a company to succeed in 2014 â€" “Employer Branding” must be their priority!   Although The Great Recession of 2008 is now behind us, our economic recovery is still in flux with many mitigating factors. Social media has been one of the best innovations of the 21st century.   But one thing is for sure â€" social media can tear a company down in just a few key strokes.   People will no longer tolerate being bullied at work or subject themselves to daily, psychological warfare-filled environments.   They’ll either quit or get fired for standing up for themselves.   And, people are very willing to share information good or bad on-line! This trend has left the workforce filled with disgruntled, disengaged employees who are losing their zest to do a job well done.   Aside from the company earning a nasty reputation, their bottom line is affected as top talent is walking out the door. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} Dr. John Sullivan, an internationally known HR thought-leader from the Silicon Valley, states “There is now a growing division between the one percent top employer brand firms in each industry (e.g. Google, Facebook, Deloitte, PG, and McKinsey) and the remaining 99 percent of firms that simply offer “paycheck jobs”. This dramatic and perhaps insurmountable difference in brand strength and employee treatment may permanently limit the capability of the remaining 99 percent to attract any more-than-average talent.” He goes on to say that even though your organization may be located outside the nouveau walls of the Silicon Valley, there is a lot that it could be learned from the Googles, Twitters, and the Facebooks of the world. Get out of your, “This is the way we do it, and this is the way it’s always been done” mentality! Get rid of your antiquated practices.   Try new recruiting, retention, and management approaches that are now possible because of new technologies. Remember companies like Kodak, TWA, Polaroid, Hostess Twinkies, Oldsmobile, and the “black, corded Ma Bell telephone.”? Well, they felt like the rug got pulled out from under them because they did not keep up with the changes happening in the world. Dr. John Sullivans WARNING “The lesson for all to learn from the Silicon Valley is that if the speed of change outside your organization exceeds the speed of change inside your organization, your end is in sight, and unfortunately insiders will probably be the last to actually see the end coming.” There’s a rich pool of talent in the market.   Find ‘em and hire ‘em!   Treat them well and they’ll treat your company like it’s their own!

Truth be told, you will presumably require something to give you an edge over the opposition. That is the place a selection representative becomes possibly the most important factor. Related: 10 Things Recruiters Won't Tell You (But I Will!) In any case, is a spotter directly for you? It depends. Stars: 5 Reasons Why You Should Use A Recruiter Here are a few reasons you should utilize a spotter in your pursuit of employment: 1. You get the chance to tap a free help. They are typically free. Truth is stranger than fiction, free. An outside selection representative is regularly employed for and paid for by organizations. Despite the fact that the organization takes care of the tab, the selection representative's responsibility is to locate the best competitor. In the event that that is you, ensure selection representatives know it. They have the organization's ear and can help put the best up-and-comers at the highest point of the meeting list. Utilize this for your potential benefit. 2. You're bound to get associated with a bigger organization. Since enrollment specialists cost organizations a heavy total, they will in general speak to bigger organizations as it were. On the off chance that that is the course you're after â€" huge brand names and worker figures in the hundreds â€" at that point an enrollment specialist might be your in to the huge organization you've had your eye on. 3. You can get a more significant compensation. At the point when scouts make a rate, as opposed to a level charge, they might be bound to assist you with arranging a more significant pay. At the end of the day, the more cash you make, the more cash they make. It is along these lines to their greatest advantage to get the competitors they set forward the most cash. 4. You will get consistent criticism on your pursuit of employment. Since enrollment specialists are the go-between among up-and-comers and organizations, they have within scoop on what businesses are searching for nowadays. They know the patterns for the business you're after, the titles you need, and they can give you explicit, significant takeaways each time you don't make the cut. 5. You may find a totally new profession. Spotters will probably clutch your name and data for what's to come. While they are not profession mentors and are not working straightforwardly for you, the great ones do set aside some effort to comprehend your qualities, shortcomings, and interests since they realize they may require you whenever another open door comes their direction. They may really return to you with an employment opportunity that is not actually what you're chasing yet that may make a solid match for you. Cons: 5 Reasons You Should Not Use A Recruiter Then again, there are a few reasons you might not have any desire to have a selection representative assistance you. Here are a couple: 1. They request cash. Be careful about any selection representative that vows to help you for a high charge. Since organizations pay for such a significant number of enrollment specialists, you should do your exploration on any selection representative that needs you to delve into your pocket. This organization is more probable an occupation situation organization and not an enrollment specialist. Ensure you have a decent comprehension of the expense, and how it analyzes to the pay and employment they can really help convey. 2. A few enrollment specialists are really tricks. Sadly, there are individuals and organizations out there that go after others during the pursuit of employment. Much the same as organizations that charge high forthright expenses, some may need your own data just to utilize it to take your character. Be cautious about what data you give out and to whom. 3. They are unoriginal. While a few people may like that selection representatives go about as the broker, the procedure prevents you from straightforwardly reaching organizations yourself. Remember this in the event that you are increasingly keen on making an individual association with an organization from the earliest starting point. 4. They are a bit much for getting a vocation at a little organization. On the off chance that you are planning to land with a little organization, you may not require a selection representative by any stretch of the imagination. Never limit your hunt to only one selection representative; keep on searching for occupations and follow up on leads all alone, to expand the kind of organizations where you'll need to work and that will need to enlist you. 5. They are not perfect for vocation changers. Enrollment specialists may not completely get you in case you're looking to totally change your vocation. They are normally progressively open to working with work competitors that fit a specific form and that have remained in a particular sort of industry or occupation for a little while. They for the most part help work searchers and bosses make a decent match between certain ranges of abilities. On the off chance that you don't have those aptitudes yet, a selection representative will probably not have the option to persuade an organization to try and get you in for a meeting, nor will they likely need to. Once more, their main responsibility is to discover the organization the absolute best competitor. There are sure circumstances where utilizing a scout can be an incredible assistance toward getting you in the entryway. Likewise, they ought to keep you normally refreshed and restoring your calls and messages in a sensible time period. They should treat your vocation with as much regard as you do. This implies they should meet with you and invest energy becoming more acquainted with you. They should assist you with editting your resume, plan for meetings, and think about offers. They should just send your resume out to commonly settled upon firms. In particular, they ought to never under any circumstance shoot your resume to firms without your assent, nor should they send your materials to firms without affirming there is a need. A selection representative ought to consistently be acting to your greatest advantage, not theirs. They should be a legitimate counsel. You won't be a solid match for each firm, and that is alright. Your lawful spotter ought to be straightforward with you about things like an association's character peculiarities, hard working attitude, or partner joy. Besides, they should offer you fair thoughts and direction. A decent lawful scout may move you to take a gander at firms you might not have needed to consider at first, yet they never should pressure you into applying anyplace you aren't happy. Keep in mind, taking a gander at different firms doesn't mean you need to really leave your present firm. During the data gathering process you may discover that you're most appropriate at your present firm-or, you may find you're a superior fit somewhere else. Despite the result, you've made a positive advance in your vocation by surveying your present circumstance and looking towards your future. It is apparatus used to remove candidates. Sounds shocking, doesnt it. My disclaimer is, I am not a HR proficient. I am a manual for help work searchers explore the way toward getting recruited. I may likewise include, that those two proclamations are exceptionally large picture. I am certain there are organizations who really have confidence in their online application framework and attempt and use them for more noteworthy's benefit of finding the correct up-and-comer. Be that as it may, the reality stays, as they survey the entries, they are screening out applicants. That is their activity. A few days ago, an occupation searcher was posing an inquiry she had about an online application. Her inquiry was: What do you think they implied by ? She wasnt sure what answer to give them. On the off chance that she gave the correct answer, her application would push ahead all the while. On the off chance that she gave an inappropriate data, shed end up in the wastebasket. There was a ton riding on her reaction on the application. You know how she settled it? She speculated what she THOUGHT they implied. Jobseeker Heres How to Attract Headhunters

Jobseeker Heres How to Attract Headhunters Looking for a new job can be a time-consuming and often difficult process. If you are already employed in an executive position that takes up most of your time and energy, you might wonder how you’ll ever get around to it. The truth is, however, that some of the best jobs available are not advertised at all. Instead, companies employ professional headhunters to search for the perfect candidate. So how do you get the headhunters to notice you? Read on for our advice: Start Now: Even if you’re not actively looking for a job right now, it’s never too early to prepare for the future. During your career, you may have contact with headhunters or executive search firms for example, if you are looking to hire staff yourself or if you are approached to give a reference for a former colleague. By going out of your way to be helpful now, you could be making a good impression that will work in your favour later on. Aim to Impress in your Current Job: If you are thinking of moving on, it might be tempting to ease up a little in your present position, especially if you’re preoccupied with searching for a new job. But if you want to maximise your chances of that new job finding you, taking the opposite approach is probably wise. After all, headhunters are looking for the best possible candidate for their position, and news has a habit of getting around. Make sure that if your name is being mentioned, it’s for the right reasons. You never know who is connected to whom! Get Out There While doing well at your current job is fundamental, you’ll need to do more if you really want to make sure that your qualities are brought to the attention of headhunters. There are a number of ways you can get yourself noticed: Get Your Name in Print:  If your company produces publications or there is an industry journal related to your field, publishing an article is a great way to get yourself noticed outside your own organisation. Attend Conferences:  To the same end, it could be well worth your while to put yourself forward to attend conferences and events on behalf of your current company. If you can speak there, so much the better, but if not, you can certainly network. While you are there to represent your company, you are representing yourself as well. Events like these provide valuable opportunities to mingle with headhunters and potential future employers. LinkedIn The above points are tried and tested methods that have provided executives with effective ways to make their mark for generations. However, the modern business world offers an additional means to this end through social networking. LinkedIn is probably the most effective social networking platform when it comes to attracting the attention of headhunters. Here’s how to get the best out of it: Use Keywords Effectively:  When headhunters use LinkedIn to search for potential candidates, they do so using keywords (for example, those related to job titles, key skills and location). By making sure you include the relevant keywords in your profile, you can maximise your chances of showing up in a search. Be careful not to overdo this a profile that has obviously been overstuffed with keywords won’t impress at all. Connect With 500 People:  By having 500 connections or more, you will vastly improve your chances of showing up in as many searches as possible. It might seem like a tall order, but connecting with 500 people who are involved in your field is better than making 500 random connections. To improve your chances of connecting with people you don’t know, send them a personal message pointing out your shared interests. Join and Contribute to Groups:  Recruiters often look at groups relating to their field to find potential candidates. By taking the time to join and comment, you will make yourself more visible to them. With any form of networking it’s wise to be discreet. Having your office find out that you’re looking to move on isn’t ideal if you’re not yet ready to tell them yourself. When it comes to social networking, be careful of mixing business with pleasure. An ill-considered remark on Facebook, for example, could easily undo all the hard work you’ve invested in LinkedIn, and could even jeopardise your entire career. Both traditional and internet-based networking should be seen as a long-term investment in your future. By building genuine connections over time, you’re more likely to find people who are willing and able to help you when the time comes to look for a new job. Contact the Headhunters Directly Perhaps the most proactive thing you can do is contact headhunters or search firms directly and ask them to add you to their database of potential candidates. Approach this in the same way as you would search for a job, and take the time to research firms that you think fit your skills and attributes best.
