Jobseeker Heres How to Attract Headhunters
Jobseeker Heres How to Attract Headhunters Looking for a new job can be a time-consuming and often difficult process. If you are already employed in an executive position that takes up most of your time and energy, you might wonder how youâll ever get around to it. The truth is, however, that some of the best jobs available are not advertised at all. Instead, companies employ professional headhunters to search for the perfect candidate. So how do you get the headhunters to notice you? Read on for our advice: Start Now: Even if youâre not actively looking for a job right now, itâs never too early to prepare for the future. During your career, you may have contact with headhunters or executive search firms for example, if you are looking to hire staff yourself or if you are approached to give a reference for a former colleague. By going out of your way to be helpful now, you could be making a good impression that will work in your favour later on. Aim to Impress in your Current Job: If you are thinking of moving on, it might be tempting to ease up a little in your present position, especially if youâre preoccupied with searching for a new job. But if you want to maximise your chances of that new job finding you, taking the opposite approach is probably wise. After all, headhunters are looking for the best possible candidate for their position, and news has a habit of getting around. Make sure that if your name is being mentioned, itâs for the right reasons. You never know who is connected to whom! Get Out There While doing well at your current job is fundamental, youâll need to do more if you really want to make sure that your qualities are brought to the attention of headhunters. There are a number of ways you can get yourself noticed: Get Your Name in Print: If your company produces publications or there is an industry journal related to your field, publishing an article is a great way to get yourself noticed outside your own organisation. Attend Conferences: To the same end, it could be well worth your while to put yourself forward to attend conferences and events on behalf of your current company. If you can speak there, so much the better, but if not, you can certainly network. While you are there to represent your company, you are representing yourself as well. Events like these provide valuable opportunities to mingle with headhunters and potential future employers. LinkedIn The above points are tried and tested methods that have provided executives with effective ways to make their mark for generations. However, the modern business world offers an additional means to this end through social networking. LinkedIn is probably the most effective social networking platform when it comes to attracting the attention of headhunters. Hereâs how to get the best out of it: Use Keywords Effectively: When headhunters use LinkedIn to search for potential candidates, they do so using keywords (for example, those related to job titles, key skills and location). By making sure you include the relevant keywords in your profile, you can maximise your chances of showing up in a search. Be careful not to overdo this a profile that has obviously been overstuffed with keywords wonât impress at all. Connect With 500 People: By having 500 connections or more, you will vastly improve your chances of showing up in as many searches as possible. It might seem like a tall order, but connecting with 500 people who are involved in your field is better than making 500 random connections. To improve your chances of connecting with people you donât know, send them a personal message pointing out your shared interests. Join and Contribute to Groups: Recruiters often look at groups relating to their field to find potential candidates. By taking the time to join and comment, you will make yourself more visible to them. With any form of networking itâs wise to be discreet. Having your office find out that youâre looking to move on isnât ideal if youâre not yet ready to tell them yourself. When it comes to social networking, be careful of mixing business with pleasure. An ill-considered remark on Facebook, for example, could easily undo all the hard work youâve invested in LinkedIn, and could even jeopardise your entire career. Both traditional and internet-based networking should be seen as a long-term investment in your future. By building genuine connections over time, youâre more likely to find people who are willing and able to help you when the time comes to look for a new job. Contact the Headhunters Directly Perhaps the most proactive thing you can do is contact headhunters or search firms directly and ask them to add you to their database of potential candidates. Approach this in the same way as you would search for a job, and take the time to research firms that you think fit your skills and attributes best. We will also make sure you have some other important career docs ready including Thank You letters, recommendations, endorsements and portfolios. And last but certainly not least, youâll learn how to complete a job application effectively so it actually gets past the application tracking system and onto a real live person. This is equal part art and science, but we do continually strive to collect data about whatâs working now. Weâll update this article periodically to make sure you always have the latest and greatest tips on how to make sure your job search documents get the results you desire. 10 Things You Need to Find Employment: 1. Resume Branding Strategy This is the step that is often missed by job searchers. One of the biggest mistakes when searching for employment is not doing this pre-work and really thinking about your branding strategy before you start updating your resume. So start asking yourself some questions like what is the first thing that you want the interviewer to know about you? Remember, often a recruiter only spends 5-7 seconds on your resume so you must be ready to convey the most important part first! Also, what makes you unique and what makes you awesome? Its ok to brag! 2. Keywords and Job Descriptions If you miss this task you might not actually even get your resume seen by a live person if you donât pass the computer system! When you apply, you are competing with on average 250 other resumes and a computer system is weeding out the best resumes. What are the computers, otherwise known as application tracking systems, looking for? The right Keywords! We donât want you automatically disqualified for employment because you donât have the right keywords included in your resume. 3. Accomplishments and Results I always recommend starting out a resume with a summary statement. A summary statement should be about 4-6 lines and include the top 5 things you want them to know about you. This is where you are going to highlight your most relevant strengths, results that are unique to you and the job you are applying to. Remember to always focus on your prior results and accomplishments. Never just list tasks you have done in the past. This is what everyone else does so stand out instead! 4. Resume Structure Itâs also time to pick out which resume format and template you want to use. There are four types of resumes you can choose from so pick what works best for you: 1. Functional Resume. This resume is focused on your skills and experiences rather than your chronological work history. It is used most often by people who are changing careers or who have gaps in their employment history. 2. Chronological Resume. This resume starts by listing your work history, with the most recent position listed first. Employers typically prefer this type of resume because itâs easy to see what jobs you have held and when you have worked at them. 3. Combination Resume. With this type of resume, you can really highlight the skills you have that are relevant to the job you are applying for and also provide the chronological work history that employers prefer. 4. Non-traditional resume typically includes photos, graphics, logos and any other images. This could be web-based or an online portfolio. This type of resume is perfect for non-traditional roles where the job description requires creativity and thinking outside of the box. This is the resume if you want to stand out and the company you are applying at is not conservative. 5. Cover Letter Structure So your heads probably exploding with resumes and keywords, so letâs take a break from resumes and move onto crafting a fabulous cover letter. Your cover letter is really important because some hiring managers donât even look at a resume and only look at the cover letter. Thatâs because the cover letter should really give them a great introduction and background to who you are. It should capture the most important items from your resume. So donât set your cover letter aside like itâs not important. So letâs back up a bit and start at the beginning. What is the purpose of the cover letter? Cover letters explain the reason for your interest in a job and they identify your most relevant skills or experiences. 6. Job Search Application Take the time to read all the instructions and briefly review the full application before you start to fill it out. This prevents repeating information or putting it in the wrong place. Apply within the first week that job is posted. Research shows your chances of getting a call back are higher if you get the application for employment in as soon as possible. I have way more job search application tips, if youd like them I have included all of them in my resume makeover course. Grab your spot now for only $25 before Feb 15th. 7. Thank You Letter Templates Tired of going to job interview after job interview? Sending a thank you note will help you stand out from the crowd. Itâs all too common to hear that hundreds of people are applying for one job these days; once you get an interview itâs important to differentiate yourself as much as possible from the other candidates. Sending a thank you note after your interview is a great way to be remembered and to make a positive impression that could lead to your dream job! 8. Letters of Recommendations Think letters of recommendation arent needed anymore? Think again. You just never know if you will need it in the future so itâs better to get it now before the person forgets about your accomplishments. It will also help you improve your resume and cover letter because they may remember things you really helped with that you had forgotten. It also prepares them to be listed as references in the future so that when they get a call from someone they remember that letter they wrote you. 9. List of References Never list references on your resume. Wait until the employer asks for them as part of the application or interview process. Most references should come from previous supervisors and co-workers whom you worked closely with in the past, though you may also choose to list an educational mentor/professor or personal/friend/character reference. 10. Portfolio So what is a career portfolio? A career portfolio is a support document that is used to support what your resume claims. I know very few people who have them but I created one when I was on the job hunt and it helped me get my dream job AND I have hired people who have presented their portfolios to me as well. Do you have all of these ready to go? If not, join our Resume Makeover course and get all of the above to spruce up your resume and cover letter. Grab your spot before our 50% Valentines Day promotion ends on Feb 15th!

When curve balls are thrown at you seize control - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
When curve balls are thrown at you seize control - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Almost always there exists a way around troublesome situations, and itâs up to us to take action. But before hasty actions are taken, pause to consider the options. Confer with your better friends as to how they might handle similar situations. Over time, make it a habit to take the time to frequently update one another. Sharing your history and progress empowers those friends to advise you well, when the going gets tough, so that you may keep on going. Moving forward instructs you on how to qualify and match the better connections for greatly improved results. At the time curve balls are received is an excellent time to revisit your values and priorities, and whether your long-term vision is due for change. Should this be the case, create a new plan for getting to where you prefer to be. Usually we want to remove ourselves from the situation as quickly as possible, so this is the time to also increase time efficiencies while putting priorities in place for moving forward. The good news about the desire to accomplish much in so little time is that there is no room to second guess yourself, or for allowing fear to enter the picture. For example, if you are an entrepreneur who is told about an interesting event in passing, ask for the details and push yourself out the door to attend. Connect with new people wherever you may. The unexpected conversations frequently reveal new ideas. Extra Effort An effective technique suggested for beginning salespeople is to make ten extra phone calls per day. Those who choose to pick up the phone to ask for an appointment are able to improve their phone and meeting skills after having made repeated calls. Eventually they learn how to get in the door for the desired appointment and make a great first impression. Connecting Online Today, social media makes the introductions far easier. The profile page of the person with whom you are about to connect is a great place to become acquainted. Next, write a brief message, include what caught your attention, and then ask permission to connect online and possibly by phone. Finding commonality is the beginning of a pending relationship. A great conversation starter, upon connecting with people both in-person and online, is to ask if they would be interested in exploring ways in which to help one another. Very few will turn that offer down. The next step is to offer a range of dates and times, nail one specific time down, and then show up for the meeting. After in-person meetings, interviews, and online meetings, write a thoughtful sentence or two about how much you enjoyed the conversation. If you found ideas to explore together, express your enthusiasm for doing so. Initiating action, pursuing actionable goals with timelines included, and following up on the action taken, will drive sales and long-term relationships for a returning and referring clientele. Taking action transforms into the Smooth Sale!

4 Easy Ways to Make Your Resume Stand Out in a Crowd
4 Easy Ways to Make Your Resume Stand Out in a Crowd 162 Flares 162 Flares Kyle Henderick is a digital marketing specialist at Yesmail and a Managing Partner/Resume Consultant at Dream Resume LLC. Before diving into a career of digital marketing and professional resume writing, Kyle tested the waters for his career by having 3 internships ranging from healthcare to media sales to marketing technology. Gaining valuable insight from the experience he was finally able to find and pursue his true passion. He loves all things Chicago and is a diehard Bears, Bulls, White Sox U of Illinois fan. Connect with him on Twitter at @khenderick Ok, letâs be honest, no matter what anyone says and how important resumes are, it does NOT make them any bit of fun to put them together. The worst part is while you put a lot of time and effort into creating a resume that truly represents you on paper, unfortunately you do not have a lot of time to make an impression on recruiters reading your resume. That is why you need to hone in on what you want out of your career and focus your resume around your personal strengths and goals. After you have locked down and nailed the job search tips and resume writing basics, here are 4 easy ways to enhance your resume and make it stand out in a crowd. 1. Understand the job role first, then tailor your resume to it When writing a resume typically people try to create a one size fits all version to send to any and every company they are applying to. Now imagine you are the recruiter sifting through a stack of resumes on your desk, do you think youâd pick the non tailored/generic resume? Before you begin writing your resume read the description of the role to figure out what personality traits are essential and what the company is looking for in a candidate. After you find this, you can tailor your resume around these strengths and back it up with some of your real world experience. This will automatically put you a step ahead of other applicants who still stick to the one size fits all strategy. 2. Forget about length, focus on clarity and a clean layout People consistently ask me whether or not their resume should be narrowed down and limited to one page. I tend to agree with a previous post written on Corn on the Job, âIf youâve got it, flaunt it.â In my experience, recruiters tend to focus on readability and clarity more than they do overall length, so as long as every point you are making on your resume has a direct strength and goal attached to it, it needs to be included. What is more important than length when writing your resume is ensuring that you have a clean, clear and easy to read layout. Recruiters have a tough task of getting through more resumes than you can imagine every day, the easier you make their life and the better they can identify your strengths, the more likely you will be receiving that interview call. 3. Reinforce your experience with specific and meaningful numbers Whenever possible include specific numbers and results that reinforce your experience and highlight strengths. This can range from results from a project to the number of people on the team (more people means it was typically a tougher project to manage). These specific numbers help to quantify your previous experience in ways that become a more telling story of you as a person. The more specific you make the description in the resume the better. For example, if you are referencing a website implementation you might say âFacilitated X team members over a Y month period to lead a website redesign and content production process, final result led to increased website traffic of Z%.â When you backup your experience with specific numbers, it will show your benefit to the company you are applying to and will help ensure your resume wonât be tossed aside. 4. Use activities outside of work to fill gaps in your experience No matter your experience level, there is always potential to run into a role that exposes a few gaps on your resume that your professional experience just doesnât cover. This is a perfect time to use activities outside of work to fill these gaps while highlighting dedication to your personal development outside of work. It is easy to work and be dedicated when you are getting paid, it is completely different take the lead and show passion during your free time. These out of work activities allow you to showcase soft skills and qualities that you may not have been given the opportunity to show off in your professional experience. This is often common with young professionals early in their career when trying to define leadership. It is a hard quality to prove if you arenât directing a team, and in your outside activities you can showcase how you led a club, group or organization to achieve their goal. While everyoneâs resume will have a different story to tell, using these 4 strategies will help make your resume stand out from the crowd. These are just a few easy ways to help have your resume stand out, what are you doing now to differentiate your resume from the pack?
